Top Ten Tuesday: Books On My TBR I'm Scared of Picking Up

Image
Hey guys! Today I decided to partake in this week's Top Ten Tuesday hosted by  The Artsy Reader Girl . TTT is something I want to try doing on this blog, but I won't promise to do it every week, especially if there's not a topic I enjoy!  1. The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon I absolutely loved the first two books in The Bone Season series, and unfortunately I haven't got round to reading the third yet, but I still think it's going to be a great series. So when I found out Samantha Shannon was coming out with a new book I jumped at the chance to buy it, however I didn't realise how long it was - my hardcover copy has 804 pages . I am absolutely terrified of picking it up, how am I meant to read a book with 804 pages? What if I hate it after spending all that money on it? But I know that's ridiculous, going off of the synopsis and ratings on goodreads I should love this! And I really enjoying Shannon's writing style so what...

Recent TV Show Binges #3

Image
1. Good Omens (available on Amazon Prime) It kind of feels like the whole of the internet has binged this series, and then consequently fallen in love with a demon and an angel. And I being unoriginal, have done the same. I unfortunately haven't read 'Good Omens' yet but I hope to now I've seen the TV show because oh my god this was great. The show centres on a demon, Crawley, and an angel,  Aziraphale, names which you may recognise if you're a Christian, or if you're obsessed with Supernatural - kinda weird to be addressing you together like this. The two of them both fight for different sides, Heaven and Hell, and try to ensure either good or bad is the main influence on the human race. Throughout their centuries on Earth however, they have struck up a wonderful  friendship and have been committed companions. When they hear  Armageddon is coming, the  two work together to try and put a stop to it and save their home, Earth.  This series somehow ...

The Flame In The Mist by Renée Ahdieh Review

Image
This review is gonna be a bit of a mess, but my god am I having some internal struggles over just what I think of this book. I flew through this book in a day and whilst reading I noticed a few things, I should point at before this begins it was enjoyable, but in a trashy kind of way. However, the issue with this is when I read a book that fast it means it can be amazing, but more often that not it means it really isn't very good. Funnily enough, after I put it down some things just didn't sit right and that's real concerning to me.  Firstly we have the main character Mariko, who is supposed to be based off of/inspired by Disney's Mulan, which amazing because who doesn't love Mulan? And I really wanted to love Mariko! And I did at the start, the first chapter made me think we were going to have a smart, competent YA female lead, but I'm not sure we did get that. Mariko is established as a competent and inventive girl in the narrative, but we're unfor...

Lets Talk About Reading Slumps

Hey Everyone! So I posted something earlier this year about how I'm not going to apologise about going away for periods of time and I'm going to resist doing that now, even if not apologising is going against every British bone in my body.  Just to give you a brief outline though, something happened in my personal life ( again ), and I didn't cope too well. But I'm not going to talk about this here because really I don't want to talk about this here.  But something I will talk about is the impact it's had on my reading, because I haven't read a single book since February, and that's just crazy to me. I've never had a reading slump this bad before, I am just so unmotivated to read right now and I can't seem to get out of it and I have tried everything.  I've tried buying books and putting them on my bedside table but it hasn't helped, I've borrowed books from the library and it's not helped, I listened to 95% of an...

Why We Broke Up by David Handler Review

Image
Do you ever read a book that you push yourself through because it's kinda boring but you expected it to be good, so you keep reading in the desperate hope it may get a little bit better? 'Why We Broke Up' was that book for me. It was only after finishing this book did I learn that David Handler occasionally writes under the pen name Lemony Snicket, as in the author that partially ruled my childhood along with other great authors like Rowling. At first, I didn't believe it; I couldn't believe Lemony Snicket had written something I found so dull and I'm just so disappointed. The story of 'Why We Broke Up' is centred around a young girl named Min, as she writes a letter to her ex-boyfriend Ed, with each chapter being based on a separate item she saved during their relationship. Within each chapter she talks about where the item came from, and this is nicely accompanied by an illustration of said item. It's a fairly sweet premise and you woul...

Recent Reads #2

Image
So, reading has been interesting recently, I've just been in this massive reading slump, and even when I do read I haven't really thought about what I'm reading I guess - which isn't very useful when you're attempting to run a book blog. However, I thought I would give you a little update on what I have managed to read. 1. How To Stop Time by Matt Haig So I think I went about reading Matt Haig in the wrong way. I made the awful mistake of reading 'The Humans' first, which by the way if you haven't read then go buy a copy now and sit down for a wild, emotional ride because it is one of the best things I've ever read. Now, the problem with 'The Humans' though, is I'm not sure if any other Matt Haig book will live up to it now; because this wasn't a bad book by any means nor did I dislike reading it, but I couldn't help but be disappointed because it's just not as good. I wanted it to be as good, but unfortunately it...

Looking Forward

Hi All!  Again, it's been a while and normally I'd apologise and promise I'll get back on track and post regularly - but I'm not going to do that this time. This time we're going to look forward fully instead of looking back, after all it's a new year right?  So, I'm not going to make any promises, I'm not going to sit here and say I'm going to post and read regularly. I'm going to do what I want to do, and do what's right by me. I don't want this to feel like a full time commitment, this is meant to be a way for me to unwind - not stress me out with deadlines. This year is going to be me posting what I want when I want, and it's not always going to be regular - my mental health is too irregular to promise that.  Instead I want to talk about what I want to do going forward into 2019 with this blog and my reading.  I'm going to listen to an audiobook for the very first time - kinda shocking I know. I just never tho...
